Kristin, a former economist turned freelance journalist, completed a master's and started a PhD in Economics, and then worked as an economics educator. After moving to the UK, she decided to have a go at the media industry. She’s just finished her NCTJ course and is now writing for publications such as the European Correspondent.

Her pitch, below, has everything going for it: a timely news hook, clear stakes, and a passionate writer with personal insight and long-term knowledge of the issue. It’s the kind of under-reported story editors often say they’re looking for.

Unfortunately, the editor said no.

Kristin says: “Most of my failed pitches never received a reply. But here’s one that actually did.”
